Celeb ClobberWith Madonna’s new clothes line hitting the shelves of H&M last month, we take a look at celebrity clothing ranges past and present. You can play bingo online every day and read celebrity columns like this every week here at Mecca Bingo. These days it would seem that endorsing your own clothing line is a rite of passage amongst celebs. No longer is it enough to have an acting career, singing career and two autobiographies under your belt, the truly successful celeb must now also have a range of clothes on every high street corner. The amount that celebrities actually contribute to their clothing lines is debateable of course. Madonna’s new range certainly captures the singer’s style – with plenty of cleavage and figure-hugging disco pieces – and H&M say that Madonna was involved with everything from “the smallest details”. We can’t help thinking that some of the clothing, such as white trousers and matching jackets, could have the tendency to look a little tacky on any non-famous 40-something woman though, and you can’t help questioning whether Madge herself would ever normally dress herself in such high street fare. Obviously the point is that celebrity clothing lines let the woman-on-the street dress like the stars without the designer price tag. But does it actually work? Can we really emulate star style by shopping at New Look, H&M or Topshop? And do we really want to? Two stars known for their individual style have recently brought out clothing lines: Lily Allen and Kate Moss. Both Kate, who has made a deal with Topshop, and Lily, whose clothing line will be gracing a New Look near you soon, are recognised as having a unique sense of style. Kate has been setting laid-back fashion trends for over a decade now, whereas Lily is a bright young thing known for her 50’s dresses with trainers look almost as much as for her music (and her celebrity Dad, Keith Allen). The thing that makes these two celebrities stand out is their uniqueness. They would never simply buy an outfit “off the peg”. They mix and match pieces to create their own styles. And yet, their clothing lines encourage us to go out and buy an outfit that will make us look like them, rather than creating our own unique style. So again we ask, do we really want to dress “like a star” at cut price rather than create our own style? There is an answer though. If you don’t want to go the whole hog and dress head-to-toe in Madonna, Moss or Lily, you can always compromise by getting your hands on some celebrity endorsed underwear. Elle Macpherson has had a sideline in lingerie for over 12 years now. The supermodel’s collection, Elle Macpherson Intimates, was probably one of the first of its kind, but it certainly wasn’t the last. The somewhat less ‘super’ model Caprice also has a range of best-selling pants and bras, entitled By Caprice Lingerie. She’s done so well here in the UK that she has now expanded the availability of her undies to Germany, South Africa and the United States. Kelly Brook is another celeb who has jumped on the lingerie bandwagon. Not surprising really, considering she is probably most famous for her curves. Well it aint her acting or presenting talents now is it. Bringing sexiness to the high street, Kelly’s underwear has been available at New Look for a few years now and, according to the store, it “incorporates elegance, lightness, sensuality and femininity with special cuts that will flatter the figure”. It certainly flatters Kelly’s figure, judging by the pictures on the lingerie range’s website, but whether or not it would have quite the same effect for the less model-perfect of us is debateable. Jordan aka Katie Price could hardly have passed up on the opportunity to release her own lingerie collection, given that she is famous for posing in nothing but her undies, and that’s if we’re lucky. Jordan’s range of lingerie can be found at ASDA and she’s not the only celeb who’s endorsing supermarket chic. Coleen McLoughlin is the face of a range of clothes for George at ASDA, proving that you can now get a celeb look alongside your tomatoes and toilet roll.
