March was the month that saw unknown rapper Daz Sampson beat off competition from the likes of Kym Marsh (formally of Hearsay, and now Corrie, fame) and Anthony Costa (a former member of boy band Blue) to become the UK entry for the upcoming 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, with his song Teenage Life.

Actress Portia De Rossi spoke out about suffering from an eating disorder during her time on the hit US TV export Ally McBeal. It was a confession encouraged by her partner, comedian and presenter Ellen DeGeneres, and one that didn’t come as much of a surprise to most.

Another more current and equally as successful American TV show, Desperate Housewives, was in the headlines this month when Teri Hatcher revealed she had been abused as a child by a family friend in a Vanity Fair magazine interview. Teri said she spoke out to ensure justice was done.

Before their messy split later this year, Paul McCartney and Heather Mills were busy sticking up for animal rights, posing with a seal pup on the ice floes in the Gulf of St Lawrence as part of a high profile protest against Canada’s annual seal hunt.
