Taunton gran's £29,000 bingo delight

Many years of playing bingo has paid off in a big way for a Taunton woman who has won more than £29,000.

The 70-year-old winner, who does not want to be named, was playing at the Mecca Club in Corporation Street, Taunton on Saturday afternoon, 10 May when good fortune struck.

She won the Afternoon Delight Game prize of £26,950, plus the zone prize of £2,198 and the house prize of £43 having completed a full house in 40 numbers, the lowest call in any of the 470 clubs playing nationwide.

The woman is married with four children and six grandchildren. She normally plays four afternoons a week and says she has never won anything really big before.

“I didn't believe it when they told me how much I had won,” she said. “I was on my way out when the manager told me I'd got the National prize but I told him not to be silly.”

“The atmosphere was wonderful in the club after that, everyone was congratulating me. My husband was in complete shock when I got home and told him; he thought I'd just won a fiver.”

She added that she really hasn’t any idea yet what she will do with the money but will probably buy a car for her husband.
