The 78 year-old woman, who wants to remain anonymous, was playing at the Mecca Club in the Hamilton Retail Park, Douglas Park Lane on Wednesday, 29 August when good fortune struck. She won the National Bingo Afternoon Delight Game prize of £10,000 plus the house prize of £108. The National prize that afternoon was £20,000 but she had to share with a player in Liverpool, who also completed a full house in 45 numbers, the lowest call in any of the 500 clubs playing nationwide. Her previous best win was £600 at the club several years ago, but nothing could have prepared her for her big win this time. “The whole bingo hall erupted when it was announced I had won, but I sat there calmly because I was so shocked,” said the woman, who is a widow, “I still have no idea what I’m going to do with the money, so I’ll just sit on it until I’ve had a chance to take it all in.” The winner has two children and four grandchildren and has been a member of the Mecca Club for 12 years. She plays bingo two or three times a week with friends she has made at the club. |
