Hull great grandmother wins £20,000 at bingo

More than forty years of playing bingo has paid off in a big way for a great grandmother from Hull - who won £20,000 at the Mecca Cecil Club in Anlaby Road.

The lucky winner, who does not want to be named, celebrated her 83rd birthday last month. She is sharing the prize-money with her 33-year-old grand-daughter, who was playing bingo with her when she won.

“We are a bingo playing family,” she said, “and one of my daughters is almost an addict, she loves it so much.”

Good fortune struck at the Mecca Club last Thursday, (13 September), when she won the National Bingo Afternoon Delight Game prize of £20,000 plus the house prize of £50, after completing a full house in 37 numbers, the lowest call in any of the 500 clubs playing nationwide.

The winner, who has been a widow for twelve years, has two sons and three daughters, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She says she was born and bred in Hull and lives not far from the Club. She plays three or four times a week and her previous biggest win was £211.

“I will be giving all the family money for Christmas this year,” she said, still in shock after her massive win. “I have a nice flat and want two new settees, so that is top of the list.”
