Hatfield grandmother was ‘a wreck’ after £45,000 bingo win

More than thirty years of playing bingo has paid off in a big way for a 59 year-old grandmother from Hatfield - who won £45,000 at the Mecca Club in Stevenage.

The lucky winner, who does not want to be named, says she tried to carry on playing after she realised how much she had won but was ‘a wreck.’

“I just started to cry when they told me. I was there on my own that evening and in total shock. I didn’t know what I was doing. I never imagined this would ever happen to me.”

Good fortune struck at the Mecca Club in Danestrete last Monday (10 September), when she won the National Bingo Game prize of £45,000 plus the house prize of £61, after completing a full house in 43 numbers, the lowest call in any of the 500 clubs playing nationwide.

The winner and her husband have two daughters, a grandson and another baby due soon.

“I used to take my Mum and Dad to play bingo at the Chequers in Hatfield many moons ago,” she said. “I play once a week now, usually with my daughter. She won £1,500 once but my previous biggest win was £100, and I had to share that with two other people.

“You can imagine how elated I am, even though I still don’t quite believe it. If we need something now, the money is there. It will give us peace of mind.”
